Now at Netflix Instant: The Family (2013)

The Family (2013) - Directed by Luc Besson; Written by Besson, Michael Caleo; Starring Robert DeNiro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, Tommy Lee Jones, John D'Leo.

By Kenny Howell

Robert DeNiro (Taxi Driver) decided to branch out a little bit and play a man who was involved with organized crime.

He is a former gangster named Giovanni Manzoni in protective custody in France. His new name is Fred Blake, and he lives with his wife and two kids, Belle and Warren. Because of his careless actions like murdering people that piss him off, his handler Robert (Tommy Lee Jones) has to continually move them. It is a matter of time before the mobsters that he ratted on catch up with him.

This time, he starts to write his memoirs, which really ticks off Robert. Also, he butts into community affairs in the small town trying to fix people's problems the way he used to take care of things. Eventually, everything comes to a head.

The material is kind of been there done that, so it is hard to really make much of this. It falls on the cast and Director Besson to really give it some life, something Besson has done at times in the past with movies like The Professional and La Femme Nikita, but that doesn't come until the end of the film. Tommy Lee Jones and Dianna Agron are the only ones that seem on their game, though Pfeiffer (Dark Shadows) does have her moments.

The Family is also available on Redbox, iTunes and Amazon.
