The fun, clever B-movie is fallen by the wayside over the years.

There has been good ones, like The Cabin in the Woods, which is a bigger budget example, but smaller independent fare has been just here and there.

That is why it is good to see Cheap Thrills hit the screens. It is a pretty simple premise. Two high school buddies run into each other in a bar. One, Craig (Healy, Compliance) has tried to go down the right path, but was just laid off from his job, and is worried about how he will take care of his wife and kid. The other, Vince (Embry) got into a bit of trouble, spent some time in jail, but seems to be doing fairly OK.

They meet up with a couple at the bar, Colin (Koechner, Anchorman 2) and Violet (Paxton), that are just looking to have some fun. Colin is kind of an abrasive coke head, and Violet seems detached from the world around her. Simple bets, like I bet you can't get that lady over there to slap you, or I bet you won't touch that stripper's butt, kick off a game. Colin, who seems to have a pretty good amount of cash, starts paying the two men to do little bets, and they slowly build into a more extreme direction. The night devolves into craziness, but that is what makes it fun.

Koechner always seems to play the most unlikable characters, but his Colin might be one of his most skeezy. His persona fits perfectly into this dark role, which isn't played for straight laughs. Embry is nearly unrecognizable as the bearded tough guy, miles away from the geeky high school kid he used to play.

The movie isn't breaking any new ground, and it's definitely not an Oscar caliber type film, but it is dark fun, and sets itself up perfectly for a midnight showing in the future.

Cheap Thrills is now streaming on Netflix.
