Now on Netflix Instant: Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

Olympus Has Fallen (2013) - Directed by Antoine Fuqua; Written by Creighton Rothenberger, Katrin Benedikt; Starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Dylan McDemott, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell.

If there were an award for sad looking American flags, Olympus Has Fallen would win it running away.

A terrorist organization takes over the White House, and only one American, played by a Scottish dude, can save the President.

That is pretty much all you need to know about this mindless actioner. Instead of really building characters, Director Fuqua resorts to lots of explosions, which is fine because this is an action movie. But he also spends too much time, like I said in the lead, with shots of tattered American flags, and D.C. monuments in rubble. Also, a character is being dragged away by the terrorists, possibly to their death, and they recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Needless to say, you don't really care much about what happens to the characters, so this just becomes an exercise in silly action.

However, there is a small bit that I admire about this movie. It's a bad movie, but it isn't afraid to be fairly brutal. I think that has gone away in stupid action movies in the past 20 years because studios try so hard to get the PG-13 teenage boy audience in there to watch stuff blow up. But there is place for violent action movies for adults. And I appreciate them trying to keep that up. Just wish it was in a better movie.
