I am one of those people that prefers the second Godfather film to the first. I feel the first one was setting up this world that at the time was very unfamiliar. Part II was when the story started happening.

Nowadays, these movies can seem cliché, but they are still very moving. The mafia life has been played out many times in films, but this was the first that really captured it. This film spans two time periods. The first is back in the early 20th century when Vito Corleone (Deniro’s Oscar winning performance) was building the crime family back in the old country and New York. The other is of his son Michael (Pacino) trying to expand the business across the United States and even into Cuba. The two stories blend well, and give it another layer the first film did not have.

The highlight of the film has to be the betrayal of the family that leads to one of the more memorable scenes in film history.

Godfather, Part II is now streaming on Netflix.
