Now at Netflix: Only God Forgives (2013)

Only God Forgives (2013) - Written and Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn; Starring Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm.

If you are a big fan of staring, standing, and dramatic music, you are going to love Only God Forgives.

If that isn't your cup of tea, you are probably going to be right along with me in thinking Nicolas Winding Refn's follow up to the good Drive is a slog to get through, and probably deserved the boos it received at the Cannes Film Festival. Well, I don't know if it actually deserved boos, because that is kind of silly, but it is not very good.

Gosling (The Place Beyond the Pines) reteamed with the director to play Julian. He is a mama's boy that is thriving in the Bangkok criminal underworld. However, the recent death of his brother has his crazy mom (played pretty well by Thomas) really upset. What follows is a lot of stillness, staring, and occasional ultra violence, which should have been cool if I didn't have to sit and watch people stare, and periodically blow up at each other.

There are elements here that are cool. The look of the film is astounding with lush reds that pop off the screen. Plus, some of the violent elements of the film are what you expect from Refn (The Neon Demon). But he ruins all of it with the odd pacing. It really takes you out of it. Everyone seems deadened to everything, which may be the point, but it also deadens the audience as well. He also squanders a pretty menacing performance by Kristen Scott Thomas.

Only God Forgives is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
