Movie Review: The Passionate Friends (1949)

The Passionate Friends movie poster
The Passionate Friends (1949) - Directed by David Lean; Written by Eric Ambler, David Lean, Stanley Haynes; Starring Ann Todd, Trevor Howard, Claude Rains.

By Kenny Howell

Another case of a couple just never getting the right timing.

David Lean's story follows Mary and Steven, who fell in love when they were young, and are reunited later in life. Mary is married to Howard, a man she doesn't love, but gives her a comfortable life. She doesn't dislike him, she just doesn't have the same spark she does with Steven. Mary and Steven have another chance together when they run into each other while on vacation in the Alps.

Not many people have done romantic dramas as well as Lean did. The movie is shot beautifully, and the cast is great. The ending leaves you feeling a bit empty, which I think it is supposed to, but it just doesn't feel right. Other than that, it's not one of Lean's best works, but it is worth checking out.

The movie is based on the book by H.G. Wells.

Rating: ***
