Now at Netflix: Searching for Sugar Man (2012)

Searching for Sugar Man (2012) - Directed by Malik Bendjelloul.

By Kenny Howell

Like most Americans, I have no idea who Rodriguez is.

But apparently in South Africa, Rodriguez, who is American, is as big as Elvis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. He toured during the 1970s, and released two albums that, while critically successful, no one in America bought. Unknown to Rodriguez, South Africans bought his albums in droves. The legend went that one night, Rodriguez could no longer handle the failure in life, and killed himself on stage. Some say he lit himself on fire, others say he just put a gun to his head.

There was never a definitive story, so a couple of South African fans in the 1990s went out to find out the truth. That is what the documentary entails, and I don't want to give anything away because it's great to go along with their journey. The movie is filled with Rodriguez great music, and it is cool to see how it all unfolds.

Searching for Sugar Man is also available on Netflix, Redbox, iTunes and Amazon Prime Instant.

Rating: ***1/2
