What happened to horror movies being fun?

While Mother's Day is quite scary and sadistic at times, I never quite enjoyed the experience of watching it. That is what horror used to be. It was scary and sadistic, but you didn't feel like you should have to take a shower after it was over like with many of today's horror movies.

Mother's Day is a remake of the Troma film of the same name. I haven't seen the original, but I imagine this one is a little more straight forward, and not so much a B movie. It follows a sadistic family who end up at their childhood home thinking their mother will be there. The house is owned by someone else now, and they are in the middle of a party, so they become prisoners. Obviously, lots of people die over the next too long running time of 112 minutes.

Like I said, the movie is quite scary and unsettling at times, but I just wish the movie would have just been  more enjoyable.
