Monogamy (2011) - Directed by Dana Adam Shapiro; Written by Shapiro and Evan M. Wiener; Starring Chris Messina, Rashida Jones, Meital Dohan.

Infidelity, or even the desire to cheat, is not necessarily a new subject when it comes to movies. Since there isn't a lot more to say, filmmakers need to approach it a new fashion, or the acting just has to elevate the material.

That is what Director Dana Adam Shapiro, who directed the great documentary Murderball, tries to do that with Monogamy but comes away with mixed results.

Chris Messina (Ruby Sparks) and Rashida Jones (Celeste and Jesse Forever) play Theo and Nat, an engaged couple who don't seem to be able to get on the same wavelength as of late. They try, the spark is just not there. Theo is a photographer, and he has an odd business on the side of taking people's pictures in a stalking style. Apparently that is something people want. When a woman hires him to take pictures of her in a public space, he shows up and starts snapping. She takes the opportunity to do something rather dirty. Theo becomes more and more obsessed with the photos, which strains his relationship with Nat, obviously.

Messina and Jones do good work, and they do lift the rather odd tale of an engaged couple trying to make sure they are right for each other. The movie kind of loses its direction toward the end, but the actors do what they can.

Monogamy is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
