In the last 10 or 15 years, the idea of scary movies for kids has kind of gone by the wayside. Parents are so protective these days about keeping all their kids from adversity, which is understandable, but there are good things that can be learned from being scared. We are going to be scared at some point in our lives, and movies and TV shows give us a way to work through that in safe environment.

Soapbox aside, ParaNorman is a good example of that. It has scary images, and is probably not for small children, but perfect for bigger kids. Norman, voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee (Slow West) is a little boy who sees dead people. He has a weird uncle that has kept their small town protected from a curse. When the uncle passes away, it's up to Norman to save his town.

The animation is cool and fun, and the story has some good lessons I will leave to your viewing. I hope movies like this and Coraline, which these filmmakers also made, keep coming out. Because there is a place for it.
