Not sure what Don DeLillo's fascination is with slow moving cars.

Much like the film Game 6, which was written by DeLillo, Cosmopolis has a concentration on sitting in traffic which is moving at a painfully slow pace. Also, there is weird stuff going on around the slow moving traffic, almost surrealist incidences. Much of this movie, which is based on DeLillo's book about a 28-year old billionaire played by Robert Pattinson (The Rover), takes place in this car. He takes meetings in his car, has sex in his car. All while the craziness goes on around him outside.

Much like my feeling after watching Game 6, I don't really understand the praise for DeLillo. I know very intelligent people really like him, and some of his books are considered some of the greatest of my lifetime, but his stories seem so distant to me. I have never been able to get into them, much less get into the big ideas that DeLillo is presenting. It often seems like satire without any of the biting humor. I may just not have the intelligence enough to really appreciate someone like him, but what am I going to do.

Cronenberg takes on the material, and can't really do much with it. There really isn't enough going on in this movie to highlight what Cronenberg does well. It's too slow, quiet and restrained.

Cosmopolis is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
