It's hard to hate on Hit & Run too much because Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell and Bradley Cooper just seem like such nice people. But I never really bought into this forced throwback comedy to movies like Cannonball Run.

Shepard (Veronica Mars) plays Charles Bronson/Yul Perrkins, a man in witness protection because he was involved in a bank robbery and told on his partner. For some reason, Annie, played by Bell (Frozen) is with him, and she gets dragged back into things when her ex-boyfriend alerts Charles/Yul's former partner of his whereabouts.

The movie is meant to be partially car porn, which means that they try to find, awkwardly, instances where they can get into a cool car. Makes it seem staged, much like a lot of the dialogue throughout the movie. Forced arguments between Charles/Yul and Annie, which are meant to be funny, never really land, despite Shepard and Bell's best efforts.

There are a few funny parts, mostly small bits involving throwaway characters like Koechner's (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) redneck. But it can't make for the rest of the movie which continually seems to try too hard.

Rating: *1/2
