Seven Psychopaths (2012) - Written and Directed by Martin McDonagh; Starring Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, Woody Harrelson, Harry Dean Stanton, Michael Pitt, Michael Stuhlbarg and Abbie Cornish.

Martin McDonagh's first feature length film, In Bruges, was a good kind of crazy. It was a mess at times, but a glorious mess. His latest, Seven Psychopaths, is that as well, but doesn't quite live up to his debut.

Not to say it's bad, it's pretty good, especially the cast. And at times, McDonagh's dialogue gives you shades of Quentin Tarantino at his best. It just takes it awhile to settle into it.

Colin Farrell (The Lobster) plays Marty, a writer trying to write a screenplay called Seven Psychopaths. His slightly off kilter friend Billy (Rockwell) helps him, but also helps Hans (Walken) steal people's dogs so they can return them for the reward money. They steal crime boss Charlie's (Harrelson) dog, which of course he vows to get revenge. The movie then follows Marty, Billy and Hans trying to survive, while also helping Marty write his screenplay, which is shown in very funny movie within movie scenes.

Of course, the cast kills it, and McDonagh's moments of brilliance cover up the messy parts of the screenplay. While it doesn't match In Bruges, it shows McDonagh is a voice worth our attention from here on out.

Seven Psychopaths is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
