Movie Review: Celeste and Jesse Forever (2012)

Celeste and Jesse Forever movie posterCeleste and Jesse Forever (2012) - Directed by Lee Toland Krieger; Written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack; Starring Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg, Elijah Wood, Ari Graynor, Emma Roberts.

Sometimes movies just try too hard to get things right.

That is definitely true of Celeste and Jesse Forever, the pleasant enough movie co-written and starring the terrific Rashida Jones from Parks & Recreation.

When it wants to be funny, it strains itself to be funny. When it wants to be dramatic, it really pushes itself to be so.

That's really all that is holding this movie back from being a great little indie comedy drama exploring the toughness of letting go and divorce. But as it is, it is just pretty good.

Jones (Monogamy) plays Celeste and SNL-alum Andy Samberg (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) plays Jesse. They are high school sweethearts that are separated and getting divorced, but having trouble letting go of each other. They still are best friends, just not in love with one another in the way married couples should be. The movie follows them trying to get their lives on track so they can move on from one another while still keeping the other in their lives. Celeste is more of the focus, as she has big time trouble getting things under control, but Jesse struggles as well with his new life that is seemingly headed in the right direction.

Rating: **1/2
