Now on Amazon Prime: The Woman in Black

The Woman in Black (2012) - Directed by James Watkins; Written by Jane Goldman; Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer, Ciarin Hinds.

By Kenny Howell

While it doesn't necessarily break the mold, there is much to like about Daniel Radcliffe's first real starring role not named Harry Potter and the something something.

Radcliffe (Kill Your Darlings) plays a recently widowed lawyer that travels to a small town to examine the old manor of a recently deceased woman. The locals tell him to stay away, but he doesn't listen.

He soon finds out why he should leave when he learns of a ghost woman dressed in black who is taking all the children of the village. His son will be soon joining him, so he fears that the woman in black will get his child too.

The Woman in Black has everything going for it. Creepy kids, Victorian times. Besides it not being set around Halloween, it's got all the horror set up it needs. And it really takes advantage. It lends more to the creepy anticipation than things jumping out of you, and it is beautiful to look at. May not be one that sticks with you for a long time, but it's a fun fright while it lasts.

The movie is based on the 1983 book by Susan Hill. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
