The Interrupters movie posterThe Interrupters (2011) - Directed by Steve James.

By Kenny Howell

Steve James returns to Chicago, where he filmed the terrific Hoop Dreams, to tell the story of a group trying to stop urban violence in their neighborhoods.

CeaseFire is made up of former gang members and criminals who interrupt incidents that could lead to more violence. Much of the violence is teenagers and young men and women who feel they have been disrespected, so they feel they need to respond with violence. It is something that is ingrained in them at a young age in their neighborhood. Be respected or strike out. The interrupters break that process and try them to make better decisions.

James (Life Itself) profiles several interrupters and the people they work with. Much of the movie is heart wrenching because you feel there is no hope, and you see the toll it takes on the people, but the interrupters keep working against all odds. And the movie shows some of their success stories, including kids they have helped pass that on to others in the community.

The Interrupters is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
