Now on Amazon Prime: Intolerance (1916)

Intolerance: Love’s Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916) – Written and Directed by D.W. Griffith; Cinematography by Billy Blitzer and Karl Brown; Starring Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Constance Talmadge, Bessie Love, Elmer Clifton, Erich Von Stroheim, Eugene Pallate, Seena Owen and Alfred Paget.

By Kenny Howell

This is Griffith’s most ambitious feature. He tackles intolerance and love in four different areas - ancient Babylon, Judea, 1572 Paris and modern America.

Elaborate set pieces, and groundbreaking techniques make this a silent masterpiece.

Ironic that a man that made an extremely racist film in Birth of a Nation (1915) could make a film about intolerance so effectively, but it turns out to be a stunning piece of work.

Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
