Movie Review: The Grey (2012)

The Grey movie posterThe Grey (2012) - Directed by Joe Carnahan; Written by Carnahan and Ian Mckenzie Jeffers; Starring Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney and Frank Grillo.

I kind of like this survival movie starring Liam Neeson, about a group that crashes into a frozen wilderness, only to be tracked down by wolves.

And I kind of don't.

Director Joe Carnahan handles part of it extremely well. The part where Neeson (A Million Ways to Die in the West) deals with the loss of a loved one, and wanting to commit suicide is touching and beautifully shot. The part where the wolves kind of just show up every once in awhile is not.

The two stories, while thematically working together, don't really work together in the film itself. It seems a bit disjointed, and there is no rhyme or reason why the wolves keep showing up to eat one of the seven survivors. It's almost if they show up again, and you are like, oh yeah, there are wolves in this. And they eat people.

It's not really an action movie, which is seemed it would be by the marketing. It's more about a man trying to survive what's not only around him, but what is inside his head. When it sticks to that, it works. When it doesn't, it is just your run of the mill movie where wolves eat people.

Rating: **1/2
