Criterion on Hulu: Under the Volcano (1984)

Under the Volcano (1984) - Directed by John Huston; Written by Guy Gallo; Starring Albert Finney, Jacqueline Bissett, Anthony Andrews.

By Kenny Howell

Albert Finney plays Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic who descends slowly over one day.

Firmin is in Mexico on the Day of the Dead, 1939, and his self destructive behavior finally drives everything important to him out of his life. That includes his ex-wife, who tries to reconcile with him.

The movie is based on the famous novel of the same name by Malcolm Lowry, and translates fairly well to film. The problem is the movie is just a downward spiral and it is hard to get into it. You know Firmin is destined for tragedy, you are just waiting out to find out how. That keeps the characters at a slight distance, but not far enough that you can't be affected by the eventual downfall of the main character.

Under the Volcano is a part of the Criterion Collection on Hulu.

Rating: ***
