Criterion on Hulu: The Plough and the Stars (1936)

The Plough and the Stars (1936); Directed by John Ford; Written by Dudley Nichols; Starring Barbara Stanwyck, Preston Foster and Barry Fitzgerald.

By Kenny Howell

This early John Ford work explores the fight to liberate Ireland, and the struggles of the people involved. It is adapted from the play by Sean O'Casey.

This is a rather minor work starring Barbara Stanwyck (Double Indemnity) and directed by Ford  He had already made the really good The Informer, and would make the great The Grapes of Wrath a few years later. The short running time, just over an hour, doesn't leave much time to really dig into an issue as big as this. It feels over in a hurry and never gets its footing.

Still interesting to see a young master at work. It is available on Hulu Plus as a part of the Criterion Collection.

Rating: **1/2
