Criterion on Hulu: The Naked Kiss (1964)

The Naked Kiss (1964) - Written and Directed by Samuel Fuller; Starring Constance Towers, Anthony Eisley, Michael Dante.

By Kenny Howell

A prostitute (Constance Towers) escapes to a small town looking for a new start and happiness and finds it in Grantville. She becomes a nurse assistant in the local hospital and seems to be on the right track. However, her past is still lingering and threatens her happiness.

The title refers to a term supposedly used by prostitutes that filmmaker Samuel Fuller (Shock Corridor) overheard. It is supposed to be a kiss from a man who the prostitute can tell is a pedophile. Fuller doesn't skate around the issue as usual, and he goes as far as he could in 1964. You can tell in his go for broke style why he influenced so many pulp filmmakers later, including Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained).

The Naked Kiss is on Hulu as a part of the Criterion Collection.
