Movie Review: Compliance (2012)

Compliance movie posterCompliance (2012) - Written and Directed by Craig Zobel; Starring Dreama Walker, Ann Dowd and Pat Healy.

By Kenny Howell

There is a moment near the end of Compliance, the new movie by Craig Zobel (Z for Zachariah), that lost me. That is, until I read that it actually happened, and then I didn't know what to think of it.

I am obviously not going to tell you what that event is, but it throws into question the intelligence of the characters involved. But then you start to wonder if you were put into that situation, what would you do.

The story is about a fast food joint that receives a phone call from a man claiming to be a police officer saying that one of the workers, here played by Dreama Walker, there stole from a customer, and they have proof. He asks the manager to take her to the back, and eventually strip search her. But it doesn't stop there, as the man posing as the officer takes it to disgusting new levels, and the people involved comply with his every demand.

Like I said, if this movie wasn't for the most part true, it would be hard to believe that someone can do what the "officer" says. But they are an authority, and we are supposed to obey, so would we if we were thrown into this situation? My guess would be for me, no, but I don't know. It's hard to know what it's like in someone else's shoes.

Rating: ***1/2
