Movie Review: The Kid With a Bike (2012)

The Kid With a Bike movie posterThe Kid with a Bike (2012) - Written and Directed by Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne; Starring Thomas Doret, Cécile De France, Jérémie Renier.

By Kenny Howell

Just unbelievably tragic story of a young boy abandoned by his father, and left to the care of a youth home and a kind hairdresser.

Cyril's father has skipped out on their apartment, sold his bike and disappeared. When he finds him, his father makes it clear that he can't take care of him anymore, and to never come looking for him again. Naturally, Cyril acts out, but just happens to cross paths with a hairdresser that agrees to let him stay with her on the weekends. This catches Cyril between the good and bad, a woman who wants to take care of him and get him on the right path, and the father he is drawn to, that has left him.

The key to this movie is the actor who plays Cyril, Thomas Doret. It is heartbreaking to see him crushed over and over again, and learning to deal with these huge problems of being unwanted by his blood, the father he adores. It kills you repeatedly to see him continually let down, and Doret punctuates ever scene.

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne continue to explore the depths of the human soul, never scared to look deep into individuals in pain, and how they work their way through, but not necessarily out of it. They have done plenty of great work, but this is probably my favorite of their storied career.
