Movie Review: The Babymakers (2012)

The Babymakers movie posterThe Babymakers (2012) - Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar; Written by Peter Gaulke, Gerry Swallow; Starring Paul Schneider, Olivia Munn, Nat Faxon, Chandrasekhar, Aisha Tyler.

By Kenny Howell

I never really cared for Super Troopers all that much. It had its moments, and I laughed a few times, but I can maybe recall one thing that happened.

But it has a pretty loyal following, and it has given minor careers to its makers, mostly Chandrasekhar, who has found plenty of work as a director in TV and film, some of it quite good.

But their few frat boy comedy ideas seemed to be running dry in their 2012 film The Babymakers. It follows a couple, Tommy and Audrey (Schneider and Munn), who are trying to have a baby. It doesn't work out, and they find out that Tommy has bad sperm.

Turns out Tommy donated a bunch of sperm when he was younger to help pay for his engagement ring to Audrey. So he tries to get it back from the sperm bank, but they won't give it to him. He hatches a plan to break in and get the sperm back, and of course things don't go well.

I laughed a handful of times, and really just stuck around mostly because I like Schneider, and Munn (Magic Mike) has her moments. It never seemed plausible, none of their characters appear real or interesting, and the jokes strive too hard to be low brow. It aims for a dude falling into a bunch of semen instead of, you know, trying anything clever.
